 English Language Arts

Welcome to the Frontier School Division ELA webpage!
English Language Arts is one of the core subject areas in schools. It takes up the largest percentage of the prescribed allotment of time within the classroom schedule and is the responsibility of all educators across all curricula. English Language Arts involves six components – listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and representing. These six language arts form the basis of literacy and communication. It is of highest importance that all students in Frontier School Division be successful learners in the area of English Language Arts.
The Divisional ELA program is supported by five ELA Instructional Coaches, one in each of the five areas. These coaches provide classroom based program leadership in ELA. In addition, they lead two Divisional committees: the English Language Arts Assessment Project Team (ELA-APT) and the English Language Arts Adolescent Literacy Learning Community (ELA-ALLC).


ELA-APT - The goals of this committee are: 

  • To involve classroom teachers in creating curriculum correlated relevant assessments for students in Grades 2 to 8
  • To develop thematic assessment units in reading (comprehension) and writing (communication)

  • To involve classroom teachers in exploring and sharing resources that support adolescent literacy
  • To develop and share resources pertaining to adolescent literacy
