“Working in remote and smaller communities has given me the opportunity to forge strong, personal relationships with students, teachers, and families, making my work feel meaningful and fulfilling as I get to see the long-term effects of my support. I also have the unique opportunity to learn about and engage with Indigenous cultures which helps develop my cultural competence when I learn to respect and remember to integrate cultural practices and traditions more frequently into the work that I do. I also love working more closely with my fellow clinicians because we depend on each other a lot more since we live in smaller communities, which has helped improve my experience of different disciplines and built stronger relationships. Also, being able to live in Northern Manitoba has helped me appreciate the slower pace of life and connect with myself and nature, something I often took for granted. I feel a lot of purpose doing the work that I do in my Area, supporting my close-knit communities.” – Silpa Sasikumar, School Psychologist, Area 4.
